<image:title>Polar Bear Dental Care - Dr. Alison Walsh</image:title>
<image:caption>When I was four, if you had asked what I wanted to be when I grew up, my response would have been a cheerleading doctor. I received pom-poms and the game “Operation” for my Christmas present that year. In eighth grade, the question arose again in Career Explorations class at Grace Christian School. My interests were dentist, orthodontist, or second grade teacher. As a pediatric dentist, I get to be a little bit of all of them – dentist, teacher, cheerleader. Pediatric dentistry is a perfect fit and amazing to me that I get to do what I love so much everyday. Thank you for visiting our pediatric dental office. <image:title>Preventative Care - Preventative Dental Care for your Child</image:title>
<image:caption>Comprehensive Dental Examinations During your child’s comprehensive oral examination, they will receive a thorough examination to look at the teeth, gums, tongue and even the jaw. We will also provide information about proper home dental care and talk to your child about the importance of good oral hygiene. If you or your child has any questions we would be happy to answer them. Routine Teeth Cleanings Daily dental care is an essential part of achieving a healthy smile. While brushing, one may miss certain areas in the mouths due to how are teeth are positioned. Children are also still learning to perfect their dental care techniques. During their routine teeth cleaning, any bacteria overgrowth, plaque buildup and stains your child misses will be removed. The teeth will also be polished so that they look bright and healthy. Benefits of Comprehensive Exam & Cleaning Check for any signs of decay, infection or disease Remove plaque/tartar from hard to reach areas Begin treatment early if any problems are noticed Better smelling breath Brighter, whiter looking teeth A healthier smile Fluoride Treatment Preventive dentistry is an essential part of maintaining optimal oral health. For this reason, we recommend that every child that visits our dental practice receive fluoride treatment. Fluoride has been proven to be effective in strengthening teeth and protecting them from damage due to tooth decay. Fluoride will be provided in either a paint on form or from a tray delivery system that holds a fluoride foam. Fluoride Treatment Strengthens teeth Prevents dental decay May reverse early tooth decay Quick and comfortable Sealants A dental sealant is a thin, protective coating which is applied to the teeth. Once applied to the teeth, the tooth sealant quickly hardens and seals problem areas on the teeth that would typically harbor debris, bacteria and plaque. This seal makes brushing much easier for children and can reduce the risk of tooth decay and cavity formation. Dental sealants are a quick, comfortable and effective treatment method for reducing the risk of decay. During your child’s appointment their teeth will be thoroughly cleaned before the sealant is applied. Benefits of Sealants Prevents dental decay Can arrest and minimize progression of early tooth decay Quick and comfortable More Pediatric Dental Services: Preventative Care Restorations Nerve Treatment Extractions Sedation Services Emergency Care</image:caption>

<image:title>Restorations - Dental Restorations for Kids</image:title>
<image:caption>The type of dental restorations we use most frequently are tooth-colored fillings and crowns. Both methods can protect and repair your child’s teeth. Fillings Fillings are typically used as a remedy for tooth decay. Some children are prone to cavities, which can lead to toothaches and other dental problems. Our pediatric dentists repair your child’s tooth by using a tooth-colored filling to restore the affected area. Dental Crowns A dental crown is a tooth-shaped cap, which is bonded to the tooth to restore the tooth’s appearance, shape and function. In situations where a dental filling may cause additional damage or your child has severely cracked/damaged a tooth, a dental crown may be a good option for protecting your little one’s smile. Benefits of Restorations Strengthens the affected tooth Restores the effected tooth’s shape, appearance, size and function Allows for proper speech development Improves chewing ability Prevents spread of decay and infection in the mouth More Pediatric Dental Services: Preventative Care Restorations Nerve Treatment Extractions Sedation Services Emergency Care</image:caption>

<image:title>Nerve Treatment - Pediatric Dental Nerve Treatment</image:title>
<image:caption>A pulpotomy (also known as a baby root canal) involves the surgical removal of the affected tooth’s pulp chamber. Children often experience infected/inflamed tooth pulps due to untreated decay and cavities. During the procedure any bacteria and infection will be thoroughly removed from the pulp chamber, preventing additional infection and damage. Baby teeth are not as hard and strong as adult teeth, and the nerve inside a baby tooth is closer to the outside, which is why children are often both more sensitive and susceptible to dental decay and infected or inflamed tooth pulps. With our endodontic treatment your child can experience relief. Benefits of Nerve Treatment Reduced pain/discomfort Alleviates tooth sensitivity Prevents spread of infection Prevents abscess formation Prevents further tooth damage May save the tooth from extraction More Pediatric Dental Services: Preventative Care Restorations Nerve Treatment Extractions Sedation Services Emergency Care</image:caption>

<image:title>Emergency Care - Emergency Dental Care for Kids</image:title>
<image:caption>Sometimes emergencies happen. We are here to assist you and your child if an emergency occurs. Below are some general guidelines to follow for common dental problems. If your child’s baby tooth gets knocked out, apply pressure to the area if there is bleeding. Contact our office as soon as possible. If your child’s permanent tooth gets knocked out, if possible, locate the tooth, place the tooth back into the socket where it came from and hold it there. If this cannot be done, place the tooth in a clean container with milk. Call our office immediately. There is a chance the tooth can be saved if treatment is immediate. If your child chips a tooth, put cold compresses on the area of injury to help with the swelling. If you can locate the piece of tooth, bring it with you. Call our office as soon as possible. Immediate treatment can help prevent infection and decrease the need for further dental work. If your child has a toothache, rinse the mouth with cool water and apply a cool compress to the child’s face in the area of the toothache. Do no put heat or aspirin on the sore area. Make an appointment as soon as possible. Give your child an over-the-counter pain reliever such as Motrin in a normal dose based on the manufacturer’s instructions. When you need us, just give us a call. We will help you until your child’s teeth are happy and healthy again.
